1. Why do average people respond to things immediately? We think we need to respond to the media, your boss, or to subordinates. But superstars respond after they have sought counsel. I’m not talking about legal counsel, I mean strategic counsel. Think back to the summer of 2009 when Governor Mark Sanford cried in front of the cameras about his little tryst with an Argentine woman. Sanford could have used a little restraint and deliberation. Governor Sanford handed the media a great story---don’t do the media’s job for them!
2. You are a brand. Your career, vocation, image, attitude, presentation, presence, aura is a brand. What you do, how you do it---the five Ws are linked to your success. From Condit to Elliot Spitzer—they destroyed their brand. Think about your actions strategically--cause and effect. Your life is like a game of chess. Most beginner chess players never learn the special chess move of castling which is one of the most complex. A better player may know how to castle and you lose. Now move that precept onto the board of life. If you don’t manage your emotions, they will impact your brand—which is why Tiger delayed his response at a career defining moment. .
3. Anger needs to be expressed. However, address the issue in a constructive manner--don't circumvent the truth and do it in private. Tiger did. But not Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Brett Myers. On Saturday, June 24, 2008, 36 hours before playing a game against the Boston Red Sox, Meyers was arrested by Boston police for dragging his wife, Kim, by her hair and hitting her. Fans were horrified, but not Dave Montgomery who owns the Philadelphia Phillies. Anger and domestic violence are two different issues.
4. When working through a sensitive family matter that could impact your professional life, unless asked, keep it private. When you are asked, then let other’s know that the issue is a private family matter you do not wish to discuss. For example, if you have a child or family member with a medical problem and you need to change your schedule or re-align your interests for a set period of time, communicate to those on a need to know basis.
5. Behind closed doors, everyone has challenges. It is egocentric to believe that you have an intrinsic claim to adversity. All of us have one thing in common--the fullness of our life is based on the quality of our relationships. We are all the same. People will remember how you made them feel. So, go make the world feel great about who they are…because you touch their lives!
